Google Ads & Facebook Ads Basics for Australian Advertisers

Google Ads vs Facebook ads for Australian businesses: how each platform works, typical AUD costs, GST billing, setup steps and beginner mistakes.

Last updated: 5 November 2026

Many Australian business owners type “google add”, “google and ads” or “ads with facebook” when they start researching paid advertising. The intent is the same: how do Google Ads and Facebook (Meta) ads work, what do they cost, and which one should I start with? This guide gives a plain-English overview for small and mid-sized advertisers selling to Australian customers.

1. Google Ads vs Facebook ads in one table

Google Ads Facebook / Instagram ads (Meta)
How people find you They search for something (intent already exists) You reach them in their feed based on audience signals
Best for Services, local trades, high-intent products Visual products, new brands, retargeting, lead forms
Main formats Search, Performance Max, Display, YouTube, Shopping Image, video, carousel, Reels, Advantage+ shopping
Pricing Auction, mostly cost-per-click Auction, mostly cost-per-1,000 impressions
Billing in Australia AUD, GST applied to Australian business accounts AUD, GST applied unless a valid ABN is provided as a business

2. How Google Ads works

You choose keywords, write ads and set a daily budget. Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction that weighs your bid and your ad quality (expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing-page experience). You pay when someone clicks. A first account normally starts with a Search campaign on a handful of exact and phrase-match keywords, plus conversion tracking through Google Tag or Google Analytics 4.

  • Start with 5–20 tightly related keywords per ad group.
  • Add negative keywords early (for example “free”, “jobs”, “DIY”).
  • Use location targeting “presence” so you only pay for people actually in your service area.

3. How Facebook and Instagram ads work

Meta ads are created in Ads Manager. You pick an objective (awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales), define the audience or let Advantage+ find it, then upload creative. Because people are not searching, the creative does most of the work: the first three seconds of a video and the first line of text decide performance.

  • Install the Meta Pixel and Conversions API before spending.
  • Test 3–5 creatives per ad set rather than many audiences.
  • Check whether your category is a special ad category (credit, employment, housing, social issues) — targeting is restricted there.

4. What does it cost in Australia?

There is no fixed price; both platforms are auctions. As a rough planning range, many small Australian advertisers test with AUD 20–50 per day per platform for at least two to four weeks so the algorithms collect enough data. Competitive Google categories (legal, insurance, finance, emergency trades) can cost far more per click. Our Australian Google Ads pricing guide breaks down fees in more detail.

5. Which one first?

  1. People already search for what you sell? Start with Google Search.
  2. Your product needs to be seen to be wanted? Start with Meta.
  3. Both apply? Run Google Search for demand capture and Meta for prospecting and retargeting, with one shared conversion setup.

6. Common beginner mistakes

  • Sending ads to the home page instead of a focused landing page.
  • No conversion tracking, so the platforms optimise for clicks only.
  • Changing budgets and targeting every day during the learning phase.
  • Promoting regulated products (finance, gambling, health) without the required licences or verification. Financial ads in Australia, for example, need advertiser verification and an AFSL or credit licence where applicable.

FAQ

Is “google add” the same as Google Ads?

Yes — it is a common misspelling. Google Ads (formerly AdWords) is Google’s advertising platform.

Can a business outside Australia advertise to Australians?

Yes. Both platforms allow you to target Australia from an account based elsewhere, as long as you follow local consumer law and platform policies.
