Online pharmacies, telehealth providers and drug makers who want to advertise prescription drugs on Meta almost always need LegitScript certification. LegitScript is an independent third-party certifier with no affiliation to Meta, and Meta states it cannot support LegitScript applications. This guide summarizes what LegitScript publishes on its website.

1. Who should apply
| Entity | Typical fit (summary) |
|---|---|
| Pharmacy | Operates an online or physical pharmacy dispensing prescription or OTC drugs and wants to advertise on Google, Meta and others |
| Telehealth | Licensed clinicians provide remote diagnosis, treatment and prescribing and the business advertises |
| Digital health platform | Not a pharmacy and does not employ doctors, but facilitates prescription sales via contracted providers and pharmacies |
| Drug manufacturer | Makes, repackages or labels prescription drugs or APIs; needs FDA registration and cGMP compliance |
| Aesthetic clinic | Injectables, hormone therapy, weight loss or prescription-grade skincare delivered by licensed staff |
LegitScript also lists cases where certification may not be needed (for example not selling or promoting prescription drugs). What is required depends on the platform and country you advertise in.
2. The nine core standards (summary)
| # | Standard | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Licensure and registration | Adequate licences where services are provided and where drugs are prescribed or dispensed |
| 2 | Legal compliance | No facilitating unapproved or deemed-unapproved drugs |
| 3 | Past penalties | Disclose 10 years of criminal, regulatory, civil violations and litigation |
| 4 | Affiliates and partners | Partner pharmacies generally certified too; disclose all domains and affiliates |
| 5 | Patient service area | Clearly disclose states, provinces or countries served |
| 6 | Privacy | Comply with privacy and health data laws such as HIPAA; use SSL |
| 7 | Valid prescriptions | Dispense only on a valid prescription after a licensed clinician’s evaluation |
| 8 | Transparency | Truthful, accurate claims; no unsupported efficacy claims |
| 9 | Advertising | Accurate, non-misleading ads; violating a platform’s terms can be treated as circumventing certification |
3. Process and published fees
- Check eligibility by location, business type and service scope.
- Prepare documents: licences, official registrations, controlled-substance authorizations if applicable (DEA or equivalent), privacy policy, affiliate and partner pharmacy status, product and service descriptions and ad creatives.
- Expert review against all standards.
- After approval choose “Verify using LegitScript” in Meta’s authorization flow and enter the certified website.
| Item | Published price (check LegitScript for current) |
|---|---|
| Standard application | USD 975 per website, non-refundable |
| Expedited review | +USD 2,500 per application; review starts within 2 business days |
| Annual certification | USD 2,150 per website, charged after approval |
| Trial-period certification | USD 975 application; USD 3,995 annual, more frequent monitoring |
These are LegitScript’s public prices and exclude any consulting fees.
4. Most common rejection reasons
- Licences or service scope do not match patient locations (standard 1).
- The site facilitates unapproved drugs, e.g. products labelled “for research” (standard 2); see peptide ads not allowed.
- Not all domains or affiliates disclosed, or partner pharmacies not certified (standard 4).
- Service states or countries not clearly disclosed (standard 5).
- Prescribing before evaluation, or dispensing without a valid prescription (standard 7).
- Exaggerated claims or platform-rule violations (standards 8–9).
5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
5.1 Does LegitScript certification guarantee my ads are approved?
No. LegitScript itself reminds advertisers that each platform has its own ad policies.
5.2 What if one entity has several websites?
They can be in one application, but each domain pays its own application and annual fee and all domains must be disclosed.
5.3 Is LegitScript the same as Meta authorization?
No. LegitScript is an independent certification; Meta authorization is the platform’s approval. Pharmacies and telehealth need valid certification before applying to Meta.
