What Is LegitScript? What “LegitScript Certified” Means, Who Needs It and What It Does Not Guarantee (2026)

What is LegitScript? What LegitScript certified means, which healthcare businesses need it for ads and payments, fees, and why it does not guarantee ad approval.

Last updated: 2026-10-28

When a healthcare advertiser is told to “get LegitScript certified”, the first question is usually: what is LegitScript, and is it a licence? LegitScript is a private company that verifies and monitors healthcare merchants, and its Healthcare Merchant Certification is something advertising platforms and payment networks use as a trust signal. It is not a government licence and it is not an ad approval. This article explains what the certificate is, which businesses need it, how the process and fees work, and what you still have to do after you are certified.

Explainer: what LegitScript certified means for pharmacies and telehealth advertisers

1. What is LegitScript?

LegitScript is an independent verification company. For healthcare merchants such as online pharmacies, telemedicine providers, medical spas and digital health platforms, it runs a certification programme: the business applies, documents its licences and practices, and LegitScript reviews them against published standards. Certified businesses are then monitored on an ongoing basis. Ad platforms including Google refer to this programme in their policies, which is why advertisers hear about it so often.

Because LegitScript is a private programme and not a regulator, it does not replace the licences that your jurisdiction requires. Certification comes on top of proper licensing, never instead of it.

2. What “LegitScript certified” means

It is It is not
A certification issued to a specific business and its website(s) after a document review A government licence or medical authorization
Verification against LegitScript’s healthcare standards, monitored over time A one-off badge that never gets re-checked
One requirement some platforms use for certain locations and services Automatic permission to advertise on Google, Meta or any other platform
Tied to the certified legal entity and domains listed in the application Transferable to another company, domain or account

LegitScript says certification can help with ad approvals, reinstatements and payment processing, but it also states that each platform has its own ad policies and that you must check them before you advertise. In other words, certified businesses can still have ads disapproved if the creative or landing page breaks a policy.

3. Who needs LegitScript certification?

It depends on what you sell, where you advertise and which platform you use. LegitScript lists pharmacies, telemedicine providers, medical spas, digital health platforms, pharmaceutical manufacturers and some other healthcare merchants as possible applicants. On the platform side, Google’s healthcare policy refers to LegitScript’s Healthcare Merchant Certification Program in many locations. Examples from Google’s current policy:

Location What Google’s policy says
Canada Online pharmacies must be accredited by LegitScript (internet pharmacy certification) or NABP; telemedicine providers must be LegitScript-accredited
Australia Online pharmacies need LegitScript verification or specific state registrations; telemedicine providers need LegitScript verification
India Online pharmacies must be verified by LegitScript
Japan Online pharmacies and telemedicine providers need an MHLW registration or LegitScript certification
United Kingdom, France, Spain, Sweden, Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa Telemedicine providers need LegitScript certification (details differ by country)

Rules differ by country and change over time, so always read the location section of Google’s healthcare and medicines policy for each country you target. Google also states that advertisers must be certified with Google in addition to meeting these location requirements. On Meta, prescription drug advertising has its own authorization process; see Meta prescription drug ads: authorization for pharmacies and telehealth.

4. How LegitScript certification works

  1. Check eligibility: confirm your location, business type and scope of services.
  2. Gather documentation: business and professional licences, registration details, controlled-substance authorizations where relevant, privacy policy, affiliate and partner information, and your product, service and advertising materials.
  3. Expert review: LegitScript checks that you meet its standards, which cover licensure and registration, legal compliance, prior discipline over the past ten years, affiliates and partners, patient services, privacy, validity of prescriptions, transparency and advertising.
  4. Ongoing monitoring: certification is maintained annually and the business and its affiliates are monitored.

Partner pharmacies that fulfil prescriptions for a telehealth company are generally expected to be LegitScript-certified or accredited by another recognized body. For the full document list, read our LegitScript healthcare certification process guide or the Chinese standards and documents guide.

5. What it costs

According to LegitScript’s published pricing (checked 28 October 2026), standard certification has an application fee of USD 975 per website (non-refundable), an optional USD 2,500 for expedited review, and an annual certification fee of USD 2,150 per website once approved. Probationary certification, for businesses that meet the standards but warrant closer monitoring, has a USD 3,995 annual fee. Each domain needs its own fees, and large or complex business models are directed to an enterprise programme. Fees and terms can change, so check the official page before budgeting.

6. What certification does not guarantee

  • Ad approval. Platforms still review each ad, domain and landing page. Prescription drug terms and certain claims remain restricted in many locations.
  • Permission to sell what you like. Products the platform bans, such as unapproved substances or compounded peptides marketed for weight loss, stay prohibited. See why Meta does not allow peptide and compounded GLP-1 ads.
  • A way around review. LegitScript states that advertising on platforms in apparent violation of their terms can be grounds for denying or revoking certification. Cloaking or hiding landing pages is not part of any legitimate process.
  • Transfer to others. The certificate belongs to the certified business and its listed websites. Buying or borrowing someone else’s certified status is not possible and not something we support.

7. A practical sequence for healthcare advertisers

  1. List each country you target and the services you will advertise (pharmacy, telemedicine, aesthetics, supplements).
  2. Read the platform policy for each country; note where LegitScript is named.
  3. Make sure your licences and website disclosures are complete and consistent with your application.
  4. Apply to LegitScript with the legal entity that will actually advertise and the domains you will use.
  5. Apply for the platform’s own healthcare certification or authorization, then test ads with compliant claims and landing pages.
  6. Keep records, renew on time and tell LegitScript about changes to affiliates or domains.

8. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

8.1 What is LegitScript in simple terms?

A private company that verifies and monitors healthcare merchants. Platforms and payment networks use its certification as one trust signal.

No. You must hold the licences your jurisdiction requires. LegitScript certification is an additional, voluntary programme that some platforms require for ads.

Not automatically. LegitScript itself reminds merchants that each platform has its own ad policies. You must also meet the platform’s healthcare certification and creative rules.

8.4 How much does LegitScript certification cost?

As published on LegitScript’s site on 28 October 2026: USD 975 application fee per website, USD 2,150 annual fee per website after approval, and optional expedited review at USD 2,500. Probationary certification costs more.

8.5 Can I use someone else’s LegitScript certificate?

No. Certification is issued to a specific business and its websites and cannot be borrowed or transferred.

8.6 Does Meta require LegitScript certification?

Meta’s prescription drug authorization process is separate. Check the Meta Help Center page for the countries and business types it covers.
